|
|
Flora and fauna of Rajasthan is an important aspect of tourism in Rajasthan. Lots of tourists come to visit Rajasthan every year. Since this is in the desert region of India, it is very important for tourists to know about the flora and fauna of Rajasthan before packing their bags. Just like a typical desert area, the flora and fauna of Rajasthan is very sparse. There are forests in Rajasthan but they are of the deciduous types. Slow-growing thorny trees are found in abundance in this area. The shrubs and grasses that grow in Rajasthan are the ones that have, through ages, adopted themselves to harsh climatic conditions.

The flora of Rajasthan comprises trees like the khejri and different types of acacia. ‘Prosopis cineraria’ is the scientific name of khejri trees. Only 9% of land area in Rajasthan is covered by forests. The types of forests that are found in Rajasthan are:
- Dry Mixed Deciduous Forest
- Subtropical Hill Forests
- Dry Teak Forest
- Bamboo Brakes
The Bishnoi community of Jodhpur considers the khejri to be sacred. As it is a typical tree found in desert areas of Rajasthan, this tree is highly resistant to drought. The deep root system of the khejri tree helps it to retain moisture for long periods of time. The khejri tree is a multipurpose tree for the people of Rajasthan. The thorny twigs of this tree are used as fences in crop fields to keep off animals. The dried leaves of the khejri are used as fodder for cattle. Rajasthanis eat the ripe fruit of khejri. The unripe khejri fruit is eaten as sangria after cooking.
A very brief introduction to the flora and fauna of Rajasthan is given in this article. The fauna of Rajasthan includes the various types of animal species, birds, reptiles, insects, etc. that can be found in this dry desert region. Nature lovers who are more interested to check out the flora and fauna of Rajasthan than the palaces and forts are welcome to visit Bharatpur National Park and Ranthambore National Park. About 280 to 306 species of plants can be found in these two national parks. Many of these plants are used as herbs having medicinal values.
Even though the terrain of Rajasthan is not so much friendly for living species to survive, through millions of generations a variety of birds and animals have learnt the art of survival in the desert. You can find a large number of gazelles and antelopes in Jodhpur district. These two species are considered to be sacred by the Bisnoi tribes, and hence, they worship these animal species. The Bishnois in this area have contributed to the steady development in the population of Indian Gazelle or Chinkara in Rajasthan.
